How I build my career brick by brick | When Favour meets Preparation

Path Finder’s Reflection:

”For the past week, I have been weeping bitterly to God. And yesterday night in the darkness, I found the courage to read your post about forgiveness.

Honestly, I didn’t know how to cry or behave because for the first time, someone managed to understand what I have been trying to say. What I have been feeling and all the mess in-between.
You read my thoughts, understood my feelings and desires, put words together that I have been not able to say, and say even when I have been always understood or found too much or playing too much of a victim.

Those are tags I have been given. Like I said, that piece was particularly written for me because it made me feel and seen.

You brought a prayer to God that I didn’t know how to put words together.

My dearest, I’m very grateful, it gave me hope and finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I found strength to even restart my blog and journaling.’’

…………………………..

Dear Path Finder,

I pray you find your purposeful path, walk audaciously in it, and inspire others to find theirs too.

We can all agree that there is no blueprint to success. Every person carries a unique calling, a unique journey, a unique rhythm. But over the years, through building my career and doing the deep work of personal development, I have learned a simple truth:

Preparation precedes “luck.”

When I started my articles in 2022, I had no formula for how to build a meaningful career or pursue my purpose with conviction. What I did have was willingness… and the courage to build intentionally, one brick at a time.

In many of my speaking engagements, people ask how I arrived where I am today. I often describe a picture that has carried me for years: a blank canvas, and God handing me a pen. No memo. No eraser. Just permission to begin.

I was intentional about learning how to speak eloquently. Intentional about building confidence, using my voice, and looking people in the eye, because I didn’t want to be an ordinary, rehearsed speaker. I wanted to create a connection. I wanted to imprint something on people’s hearts.

I had to learn to be okay with not being everyone’s preference.
To be okay with the sound of my own voice, my brown skin, my Xhosa accent, my background. I had to make peace with a past that tried to disqualify me: repeating my Honours (CTA), taking taxis to work, affording only what I needed, not living in fancy apartments.

But on the blank canvas?
None of that mattered.

I raised my hand for opportunities I had no experience for. I pursued secondments others didn’t consider. I knocked on the CEO’s door just to say, “Hi.” I started a YouTube channel to share my journey and hold the hands of those who came after me. I wrote on LinkedIn when nobody liked, commented, or noticed. I founded Young Professionals Hub with nothing but vision and grit. I wore every hat imaginable at my first networking event, including programme director, administrator, branding, finance, venue set-up, catering… everything.

I didn’t do any of it to be seen or chosen, but as I consistently showed up, refined my skills, honoured my gifts and remained faithful in the small things, people were watching.
 They always are.

As I continued writing on my canvas, not erasing my mistakes but learning from them, I reached a place I call “Favour Meets Preparation.”

That is when doors began opening:

Big organisations reached out for collaborations.
Ambassadorships.
Speaking engagements on respected platforms.
Invitations to high-level corporate events.
Paid partnerships.
Awards and recognition.
Mentorship from industry pioneers.
Impacting strangers.
Founding Impact House.
One-on-one consultations.
And so many other doors that opened along the way.

None of this was luck, chance or ‘manifesting’. It was alignment, intentionality, preparation and favour, the kind that opens doors you might seem “unqualified” for.

God is a God of integrity. He will not risk His name elevating someone who has not shown willingness, stewardship or excellence in the small things. This article is not to brag. Truthfully, I haven’t reached my prime. I am far from the pinnacle. I am only beginning. There is nothing here to boast about.

Instead, this is an invitation for introspection.

Are you waiting for a chance? Are you waiting on God while He is waiting on you?
I invite you to audit your life. Are you living with purpose? Are you honouring the promises you make to yourself? Are you showing up fully where you are, using what you have right now?

While there is no blueprint for a successful life, there is a pattern of preparedness that positions you for opportunities and leads to a truly fruitful life.

If this article moves you, don’t just feel something — change something.

If you feel you need guidance, clarity or support on this journey, I am now offering one-on-one coaching through my new company, Canaan Business House. We will walk through your audit together, build a plan and work intentionally toward the life you are called to live.

If you are interested, email info@oyenadyasi.com and my team will reach out with next steps.

Shalom,

Oyena
